•Certified Interpreter- a professional interpreter who is certified as competent by a professional organization or government entity through rigorous testing based on consistent criteria.
•CEU – Continuing Education Unit, the ongoing requirement for Certified Medical Interpreter’s to continue perfecting their linguistic skills.

•Consecutive mode of interpreting-the conversion of a speaker or message into another language after the speaker pauses. Speaking in the first person.
•Cultural Broker – any action taken by the interpreter that provides cultural information, clarification or offer insight in language and cultural nuances.
•HCI – Health Care Interpreting that takes place in health care settings
•HIPAA - Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act, sets the national standards for the protection of patient information, it applies to all healthcare providers. •IMIA – International Medical Interpreters Association. The IMIA ethical code of conduct is specifically for medical interpreters. IMIA members uphold high standards of professionalism and ethical conduct for interpreters. The core of this code of conduct are twelve tenets that serve as a guide to their professional behavior.

•LEP –Limited English Proficiency, a legal concept referring to a level of English proficiency not enough to ensure equal access to public services without an interpreter.
•Pre-session – Interpreter informs the patient of their confidentiality rights, suggest to ask questions for clarification, remind patient to address dialogue directly at the medical provider vs the interpreter and instructs patient to pause after long sentences.
•QME, AME, IME: Qualified or Agreed or Independent Medical Evaluations conducted in worker compensation legal cases.
•Remote interpreting- interpreting provided by an interpreter who is not in the presence of the speakers either by phone, video/on-line.
•Sight translation – translation of a written document into spoken/signed language. The interpreter reads a document written in one language and simultaneously interprets it into a second language.
•Simultaneous – converting a speaker or signer’s message into another language while the speaker continues to speak.
•Translation – the conversion of a written text into a corresponding written text in a different language.
